WELDING CAPABILITIES TO COMPLETE ANY PROJECT EFFICIENTLY

A refinery is a complex array of pressure vessels, piping, structural carbon steel, and other components that depend on welding for its structural integrity. Despite project complexities, SWAT elite turnaround specialists conduct welding and mechanical operations under extreme conditions and elevated temperatures ranging from 150 degF to 380 degF, allowing equipment repair without disrupting site operations.

GENERAL MECHANICAL

SWAT supports its client’s facilities planning activities for new and existing fixed equipment installation and modification.

CRITICAL PATH-SPECIFIC WELDING PROJECT MANAGEMENT

SWAT project managers understand the influence and importance of time-phased sequencing on a network of welding activities and precedence relationships, time constraints, and resource limitations related to accomplishing specific project objectives. SWAT project managers’ expertise and involvement in the initial stages of project planning result in welding rejection rates of <1%.

CASE STUDY: EPC’S WELD REJECTION RATE ON ETHYLENE FURNACE PROJECT REDUCED BY 59%

CHALENGE

After experiencing a ~60% weld rejection rate on one of its projects, a leading engineering, procurement, and construction company (EPC) required welding services for a uniquely large ethylene furnace project under a tight timeline.

ANSWER

For this project, the EPC contacted special welding and turnarounds (SWAT). SWATs welding project managers understood the time-phased sequencing requirements of the various welding activities to accomplish project-specific objectives. SWATs managerial expertise and heavy involvement in the initial stages of project planning result in extremely low welding rejection rates. The SWAT team implemented day and night shifts to service each ethylene furnace 280 heavy walls and meet the 24-day project deadline.

RESULTS

SWAT completed the project on schedule, saving the EPC millions in cost. SWATs work on the ethylene furnaces resulted in a weld rejection rate of less than 1%. Proving its efficiency, quality, and technical capability, the EPC expanded SWATs project scope to ~200k man hours over an 11-month span. SWATs superior project execution has led to contracting directly with the customer (instead of through the EPC).
